Historical Event on 8/15/1947

On the the stroke of mid-night on 14th August 1947, India became independent and was partitioned. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of free India. The mixed economy policy was taken on a five-year plan basis for economic development. On 26th January 1950, India became a democratic and is the biggest democracy of the world today. In 1956, on the basis of languages, India was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories. Today, there are 27 states and 7 union territories.

7/25/1982Gyani Zail Singh became 7th President of India. He held the office till July 25, 1987.
1/14/1761The third and last battle of Panipat, fought between the Marathas and the Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abadli, started. The Marathas lost 28,000 soldiers and were virtually routed in North India thus ending the Maratha hegemony.
7/27/1914Kalpana Dutta, great freedom fighter, was born at Chatgaon. (27th July, 1914).
11/14/1997N. V. N. Somu, Union Minister of State for Defence and president of The Hindu Office and National Press Employees Union from 1969, died in Army Helicopter crash at Tezpur in Arunachal Pradesh.
