Historical Event on 8/15/1947

On the the stroke of mid-night on 14th August 1947, India became independent and was partitioned. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime minister and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first president of free India. The mixed economy policy was taken on a five-year plan basis for economic development. On 26th January 1950, India became a democratic and is the biggest democracy of the world today. In 1956, on the basis of languages, India was divided into 14 states and 6 union territories. Today, there are 27 states and 7 union territories.

6/25/1975President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed the declaration of Emergency Rule in India. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi implemented the same very next day.
4/19/1994Rajindersing Sparo, first awardee of `Mahavir Chakra' and former Chief Minister of Punjab Major General, passed away.
3/30/1665Murarbaji died at Purandar fort during a battle with Dilerkhan.
9/8/1887Swami Sivananda, (1887-1963), religious leader, Hindu universalist renaissance guru, author of 200 books and founder of Divine Life Society with 400 branches worldwide, was born in the quiet village of Pattamadai, District Tirunelveli.
2/14/1952Smt. Sushma Kaushal Swaraj was born in Ambala Cantt. (Haryana).
9/29/1992Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes put India into the World round of 16 nations in the Davis Cup tennis by defeating Britain (4-1)
2/25/1897A. Vedaratnam, freedom fighter, nationalist and leader, was born in an orthodox Saiva Vellala community.
11/17/1932The Third Round Table Conference began in London. It was not attended by the Congress as the real Indian participation in the making of the constitution was negligible. Since Gandhi was in prison because of his civil disobedience movement he could not attend it either. This conference ended on 24th November 1932 without achieving anything.
6/17/1887Dr. Kailas Nath Katju, freedom fighter, politician, leader and Governor of Orissa and West Bengal, was born.
